FI 101 - the absolute basics

of the two-handed fair isle technique

"Picking" versus "Throwing"

No. 1 THROWING with your right hand (your background shade)
.

Throwing the yarn with your right hand

insert the tip of your right-hand needle into the stitch -- notice that this is happening after a few stitches have been knit in the pattern colour - so the dark yarn has been gently stranded up to the stitch being knit

No. 2 PICKING with your left hand (your pattern shade)
.

Picking the yarn up from the left hand

you've already inserted the tip of your right-hand needle into the stitch -- either swoop the right-hand needle clockwise around the yarn being held by the left hand, or wrap the yarn in your left hand around the needle clockwise

One of the above will be your normal way of knitting -- so you're half way there already!

Pickers, practice a few rounds of throwing -- Throwers, practice a few complete rounds of picking.

Then try this.....

one row of alternating single stitches of the background and pattern shades

one row of alternating 2 stitches each of the background and pattern shades

one row of alternating 3 stitches each of the background and pattern shades

.........etc.

until you are able to easily strand one inch of stitches -- 8 stitches in each of the background and pattern shades.

Now you are ready to learn how to catch long floats on areas greater than one inch of stitches.

Proceed to "Catching long floats of either shade"
