Catching a long float of your pattern shade in a stretch of multiple
background stitches |
you're in the middle of a long stretch of background stitches; insert the needle into the next stitch, lift your pattern yarn finger up wrap the needle with the background yarn, catching the pattern yarn also in the up position, complete the stitch let your pattern yarn finger relax down knit your next stitch with your background colour, locking the pattern shade back in position running below the background yarn the pattern shade is now stranded behind the background stitches, and can be stranded a further distance

here we have a run of pattern stitches, in which we want to catch the background shade slightly stretching out the pattern stitches you have on your right hand needle, strand your background shade aaround the needle then wrap your pattern shade around as usual unwrap your background shade -- see how it is caught? complete the stitch, and carry on with the background shade stranded and caught in a stitch
